publiclibrary

Urban intervention

Major cities, Israel

Ongoing since 2009

Bus station,

Metal bookshelf structure and books

publiclibrary is an artistic, social, urban project proposing the creation of a network of public libraries on top of the infrastructure of the existing urban transportation system. As part of the project, bookshelves were placed in bus stations.

The insertion of a foreign object such as a bookshelf into the a familiar bus stations was a gentle action which re-illuminated the concepts of book and library as it offered a new practical definition of the concept public library.

The pilot ran in several cities in Israel to enthusiastic user responses. Local users (city residents) operate the new libraries by themselves according to the concept emblazoned on the stations: You may take. You may add. You may return.
